Prof. Wu Po-Feng from NTU Institute of Astrophysics uncovers the mystery of why quiescent galaxies cease star formation

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, Prof. Wu Po-Feng from the NTU Institute of Astrophysics discovered a unique quiescent galaxy 12 billion light-years away. At just 1.5 billion years old, this galaxy has nearly stopped forming stars, with gas being expelled at over 200 km/s, rapidly depleting the materials needed for new star formation. A supermassive black hole at its center likely drives these powerful outflows. This groundbreaking discovery provides new insights into why early galaxies ceased star formation and could significantly reshape our understanding of the universe’s evolution.
