This course aims to develop foundational knowledge for understanding and addressing key issues in contemporary Japanese society. It approaches these issues from three perspectives: Cultural and social background, Challenges in local communities, Japan’s position in the world.

In-class learning: 30 hours (24 sessions × 3 clips per session [15-min lecture + 10-min mini-test] = 1800 minutes)
Self-study: 45 hours (for supplementary understanding)

Type of assessment

  • Accuracy of multiple-choice mini-tests assigned after each 15-minute video
  • Accuracy of comprehensive multiple-choice assessments at the end of each of the three thematic categories: Cultural and social background (8 sessions), Challenges in local communities (8 sessions), Japan's position in the world (8 sessions)

Criteria

Achievement is determined by meeting the following requirements regarding the contents described in the learning outcomes.
✔︎ Watch all the lecture videos
✔︎ Answer all multiple-choice questions correctly assigned after each 15-minute video.
✔︎ Answer all comprehensive multiple-choice assessments correctly at the end of each of the three thematic categories: Cultural and social background (8 sessions), Challenges in local communities (8 sessions), Japan's position in the world (8 sessions)

Type of quality assurance

  • Each course is reviewed annually by the JV-Campus Management Committee based on established standards and frameworks
  • With respect to the packaging of micro-credentials, the JV-Campus Management Committee conducts an annual self-assessment to ensure compliance with the standards of the Micro-credential Framework 1.0 (https://micro-credential-jwg.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/MC_frameworkver1.0.pdf), which provides the basis for digital issuance.
  • External evaluation and certification by the Japan Micro-Credentials Organization Establishment Preparatory Committee (https://micro-credential-jwg.org/).
