Program for Proposing International Understanding Education Strategies Through Experiencing Exchange of Traditional Cultures Among Asian Countries

Japanese students and international students from Asian countries deepen their understanding of their own traditional cultures. Simultaneously, by understanding the uniqueness of each other's cultures and recognizing mutual dignity, they enhance international collaboration. Regardless of their national origin, young people today have few opportunities to directly experience their own traditional culture. While communication via ICT and the internet is now possible, understanding and respecting the differences in identity rooted in each nation's traditions and culture is essential for international understanding and cooperation. Therefore, this activity uses the “kimono”—a garment known to all Japanese students and international students yet rarely worn by most—as its material, creating an opportunity to experience Japanese traditional culture. Furthermore, by experientially learning kimono dressing together and having international students introduce their own traditional dress, the students deepen mutual understanding of Asian traditional cultures. They also collaboratively propose educational strategies for international understanding.
