Understanding the IPCC AR6 WG1 - Session 1 — The Carbon Cycle and How Humans Are Changing Our Atmosphere —

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) make up a small amount of the earth’s atmosphere, but are responsible for keeping the earth warm because of the greenhouse effect. How does such a small amount of GHGs actually warm the planet? How did they get there? How long do they stay there? Where do they go? How have humans changed this? This is the Carbon Cycle; a basic understanding is essential to understanding climate change and how we can solve this problem. After we review the basics, we will explore the IPCC’s latest assessment about GHG emissions and climate impacts. [Note: we will include Japanese research on the climate system and all these topics.]
