Introduction to Galactic Archaeology~Galaxy Formation and Evolution~

‘Galactic archaeology’is a branch of astronomy that separates galaxies into stellar structures and traces galactic formation and evolution based on the properties of individual stars. The reason ‘archaeology’ appears in the name is because characteristics of old stars, including chemical abundance and spatial motion properties, provide ‘fossil’ information about the galactic past, preserving the history of their physical formation and evolution. In other words, this information is rather like DNA, and it forms the roots from which we trace the galactic past. In this course, galactic archaeology basics will be explained in an easily understood manner.
