PREP Japanese Course

This course is designed for Japanese language learners (JLPT N3, CEFR A2-B1 level) who are considering studying abroad in Japan, or internship/career development in Japan, and aims to develop their ability to understand and practice Japanese expressions, communication methods and cultural differences in business. The course is designed to develop the ability to understand and practice Japanese business expressions, communication methods, and cultural differences. Students will systematically learn about keigo (honorific language), business e-mail writing, cross-cultural understanding, how to express opinions, and reporting and communications, all of which are useful in the workplace, and will have the opportunity to practice their skills through on-demand learning and online face-to-face classes.

Learning Goal

  • Understand and appropriately use honorifics and expressions required in business situations.
  • Can properly compose business e-mails in Japanese and convey the main points in a concise manner.
  • Be flexible and respectful of cultural differences in cross-cultural communication.
  • Can report and communicate smoothly in the workplace.
  • Can practice assertive communication in situations where there are differences of opinion.

Evaluation Method

– Video viewing: 30%.
– Confirmation questions: 20%.
– Out-of-class assignments: 20%.
– Face-to-face class participation and practical evaluation: 30%.
The total grade is 100%, and a grade of 70% or higher is required to pass the course.

Special Notes

Teaching Methods

  • On-demand video viewing and confirmation questions (10 times)
  • Online face-to-face learning (3 sessions)
    ⏩ On-demand videos provide theme-specific knowledge and skills, while in-person learning sessions consolidate skills through practical activities.

Learning outside of class hours   The following assignments are performed prior to the face-to-face study:

  • Session 1: Face-to-face Learning 1 – Self-Introduction and Basic Communication Practice
  • Session 2: Face-to-face Learning 2 – Practice reporting using case studies
  • Session 3: Face-to-face Learning 3 – Practicing Assertive Communication
