Oceans and maritime affairs that support the lives, safety and security of people around the world

The following content is provided in order to develop global human resources who will be active in the oceans and maritime fields in Asia (particularly ASEAN countries) and around the world.

- Focusing on shipbuilding and shipping, marine science and technology, marine observation, and the maintenance, management, and conservation of the marine environment as major fields related to the oceans and maritime fields, we provide opportunities to "get to know, observe, and learn" about actual work and the forefront of manufacturing.
- In addition, using Japan as an example, a maritime nation surrounded by sea on all sides, we provide opportunities to "get to know, observe, and learn" about the importance of logistics economy, international trade, and international business, as well as the role, importance, and nature of work related to international cooperation and collaboration based on maritime laws, marine policies, and the international order.
- In order to provide content aimed at providing career guidance and role models in the oceans and maritime fields, interviews and on-site filming will be conducted mainly at the workplaces of Hiroshima University alumni who are active in major organizations in the industrial, government, academic and financial sectors, such as educational and research institutions related to the oceans and maritime fields, national research institutes, marine and maritime companies (shipbuilding, heavy industry, shipping, consulting, communications, etc.), government agencies (Maritime Bureau, Maintenance Bureau), and others (insurance etc.), to introduce the actual work in the oceans and maritime fields.

Competency/コンピテンシー

Course Objectives

In order to develop global human resources with a combined liberal arts and science background in the oceans and maritime fields who will be active in Asia (especially in ASEAN countries, particularly Indonesia, which is experiencing rapid economic development and strengthening the oceans and maritime fields as a national policy) and the world, students will acquire the following knowledge and related abilities. In addition, students will learn about manufacturing operations and sites in the real world, and while recognizing their social role and importance, will gain a deep understanding of “peaceful use of the seas and their sustainable development.”

– Understand the role of the oceans and maritime fields in supporting the lives, society, economy, and world peace of people around the world.
– Acquire the ability to explain the scientific knowledge required for planning, design, production, maintenance, operation, shipping, and marine information related to ships and maritime safety.
– Understand next-generation technologies in the oceans and maritime fields toward decarbonization, and be able to explain their importance.
– Be able to explain the current situation, issues, and measures from an international perspective through knowledge and understanding of the technologies, operations, policies, and laws and regulations required to protect the safety, security, and governance of the seas of the world and Asia (particularly ASEAN countries).

Learning Outcomes

The following goals are set in order to develop global human resources who will play an active role in the oceans and maritime fields in Asia (especially in ASEAN countries, particularly Indonesia, which is experiencing rapid economic development and strengthening the oceans and maritime fields as a national policy) and the world.

– Understand the relationship, importance, and future potential and sustainable development of the marine and maritime industry, which supports the lives, safety, and security of people around the world, and international peace.
– Understand the actual situation of manufacturing sites by experiencing the current operations and cutting-edge of actual manufacturing in the oceans and maritime fields (e.g. design, production, measurement, analysis, simulation, operation, business, administration/policy).
– Be able to explain the progress and overview of actual project work in the oceans and maritime fields.
– Be able to explain to others, in particular, how to proceed with projects that take safety, efficiency, and the global environment into consideration.
– Be able to express one’s own opinion on manufacturing in the oceans and maritime fields and their future state.
– Understand the importance of international relations and cooperation between the world and Asia (especially ASEAN countries), and be able to express one’s own opinion on the peaceful use of the seas and sustainable development.
