Global Startupper Seminar #4 Dr. Motoko Akiba

Professor Motoko Akiba earned her Ph.D. in “Educational Theory and Policy” and “Comparative and International Education” from Pennsylvania State University-University Park in 2001 after completing a B.A. in education at the University of Tsukuba. Her research focuses on teacher policy and comparative education. After earning her Ph.D., she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Mills College studying lesson study and as a senior researcher at McREL for the U.S. Department of Education. After working at the University of Missouri, she moved to Florida State University and currently working as a professor.​ She has held several leadership roles, including Department Chair from 2019 to 2021. Currently, she is Editor-in-Chief of the American Educational Research Journal (AERJ), a leading journal of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She is the author of Improving Teacher Quality: The U.S. Teaching Force in Global Context (Teachers College Press, 2009) and has edited several influential volumes such as Teacher Reforms Around the World, The Global and the Local: Diverse Perspectives in Comparative Education, and International Handbook of Teacher Quality and Policy.
