Learning Japanese Culture through Judo

The lecturer will introduce the Japanese culture around the tatami, a component of judo, through its historical background, with demonstrations. Focusing on the tatami and its link to rice-farming culture as well as the etiquette connected to the manners of the samurai, this course will break down the differences between Japan and the West, the need for tatami in Japan such as its use in evacuation shelters, and the differences between the past and present
