Environmental and Carbon Neutrality Issues in Architecture and Civil Engineering and their Solutions in Japan
- Destructive earthquakes
- Building damages
- Seismic safety of buildings
- Structural health monitoring
- Sustainability of buildings
Japan is an earthquake-prone country. Throughout its history, there are many destructive earthquakes happened. Learning from the lessons of these destructive earthquakes, the seismic performance of buildings, i.e., their safety against earthquakes, has been improved. In recent years, emphasis has been placed not only on safety, but also on sustainability and longer service life of buildings. In addition, environmentally friendly buildings, for example, the wooden high-rise buildings are being constructed one after another as the next generation of buildings. In this lecture, (i) first, destructive history earthquakes that had significant impacts on the seismic design of buildings in Japan and the corresponding evolution of seismic safety of buildings will be reviewed. (ii) Then, the state-of-the art methods and technologies for evaluating seismic safety of buildings, i.e., the structural health monitoring, will be introduced with examples of actual application. (iii) Finally, we will discuss the overall vision of the next-generation buildings, that can comprehensively consider safety, sustainability and environmental friendliness.
