Transforming AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use) for a Sustainable Future

In this course we will focus on efforts to develop and deploy AFOLU-based climate mitigation and decarbonization technologies in Japan and around the world. Topics covered include the benefits of composting food and reusing agricultural waste with forest waste, the use of biochar to sequester carbon in soils, and the development of sustainable forestry practices. Students will learn about technologies and policies that have been implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the AFOLU sector, and how these efforts are contributing to individual countries' overall climate goals. Case studies will be used to highlight real-world examples of successful AFOLU decarbonization technologies in Japan.

Learning Goal

  • Part 1: Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry
Outcome: Students will be able to explain the benefits of sustainable agriculture and forestry practices in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting ecosystem health.
  • Part 2: Biochar and Carbon Sequestration in Soil
Outcome: Students will be able to explain the use of biochar in sequestering carbon in soil, including the science behind the process and the potential benefits for regenerative agriculture and climate change mitigation.
  • Part 3: Composting and Waste Reduction in Japanese AFOLU
Outcome: Students will be able to explain how Japan is re-discovering a circular economy approach to resource and waste management, and convey how this can contribute to the country’s overall climate goals and positively impact other countries. Students will be introduced to satoyama management practices.
