A history of modern architecture in Japan, through examples from Chiba prefecture

Modernization in Japan proceeded almost synonymously with Westernization. In the field of architecture, Josiah Conder, a foreigner hired by the government, first trained Japanese architects such as Kingo Tatsuno in the early Meiji period. In the Taisho period (1912-1926), architects sought to adapt architecture to Japan's natural environment of high temperatures, humidity, and earthquakes. After World War II, there was a renewed search for architecture in a democratic society, and the activities of the Metabolism Group and other architectural movements attracted worldwide attention. This lecture will introduce the history of modern architecture in Japan from the end of the Edo period, with particular reference to the architecture of Chiba Prefecture.
