Design Workshop on Water-Cultural Landscapes in Response to Climate Change
This interdisciplinary workshop was jointly organized by the University of Tsukuba, Delft University of Technology, and Wageningen University & Research, with additional collaboration from the Italian landscape design firm LAND. Professionals from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and Chiba Prefecture also participated, creating a highly multi-sectoral learning environment. Alongside the three core universities, students from Waseda University and Institute of Science Tokyo joined the program. In total, participants represented nine academic fields, including architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, and landscape studies, enabling cross-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration. The main theme, “Visual Contextualization for Climate-Adaptive Environmental Design in the Tone River Basin,” focused on the Inbanuma area located within the Tone River Basin. Through field surveys, expert lectures, and interdisciplinary group work, participants investigated the region’s environmental, hydrological, and socio-cultural contexts. Drawing on these multi-layered insights, each team developed a series of architectural, urban, and landscape design proposals that envision climate-adaptive futures for the Tone River Basin.
