20250709 Tohoku-UCL Resilient Society Workshop

Tohoku University and University College London (UCL) in the UK have a strategic partnership, and in the summer of 2025, as in previous years, Tohoku University's International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) welcomed four interns from UCL Risk and Disaster Reduction for a one-month placement. This video features excerpts from the interns' research reports, based on various fieldwork activities, alongside scenes from a workshop they organized and led. The UCL students visited multiple areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. They toured earthquake-damaged structures, listened to accounts from survivors, deepened their understanding of the disaster's reality, and gained insights into the recovery progress in various locations. They then reported on the key elements of societal resilience, such as community bonds and human connections, that they explored through these experiences. In the workshop segment, participants from Tohoku University joined the presenters in discussions exploring societal resilience, guided by each presenter's theme. Participants from diverse backgrounds exchanged views and deepened their understanding. We encourage you to watch this video and reflect on societal resilience.
