Architecture and Regional Design in the World Heritage City of Hue, Vietnam, in the Era of Global Environmental Change

This collaborative workshop, organized by the University of Tsukuba, Waseda University, and Hue University of Sciences, explored the main theme of “Living-with-Floods.” Focusing on three traditional water villages located in the lagoon region of the World Heritage city of Hue, Vietnam, the workshop engaged students from the three universities in intensive field surveys. Through on-site investigations and dialogues with local communities, participants uncovered generations of accumulated ecological wisdom—traditional knowledge systems that have enabled residents to coexist with seasonal flooding. Building upon these insights, the workshop challenged students to translate this wisdom into contemporary architectural, regional, and environmental design proposals. Their design outputs present adaptive strategies that respond to future flood scenarios, reinterpreting the cultural heritage of water villages as a foundation for sustainable living in the era of climate change.
