20230825 Tohoku-UCL Resilient Society Workshop

During the summer of 2023, Tohoku University's International Research Institute of Disaster Science accepted four undergraduate students from the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London (UCL) for a one-month internship. This video contains the interns' reports on various fieldwork they performed and excerpts from a student-led workshop. The UCL students visited multiple areas affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, toured disaster ruins, and spoke directly with survivors. This deepened their understanding of the disaster and provided them a glimpse of the status of regional recovery efforts. Their reports examine community and interpersonal connections, elements critical to resilient societies that they discovered through these experiences. At the workshop, the theme of which was "What is Resilience?", discussions were held together with participating Tohoku University students. The participants exchanged opinions and rigorously examined the question of what kind of societies are resilient.
