Trans-Pacific Studies

This is a preparatory learning material for students participating in the TUFS TP-Bridge Program.

To register as a participant, please fill out the Course Registration.
Each course is 45 minutes long (consisting of three 15mn videos). Each video includes a comprehension quiz; however, this course is not eligible for academic credit.

Content/学習内容

  • This course provides a historical overview of modern Korea, focusing on three major phases: Japanese colonial rule, the division of the Korean Peninsula following liberation in 1945, and the political evolution of the Republic of Korea from authoritarianism to democracy. Through an examination of colonial governance, the emergence of two separate Korean states, and the Korean War, students will gain a deeper understanding of the political, social, and historical background that have shaped contemporary Korea.Lecturer: Takeshi Fujii

  • This course examines how the Philippines serves as a bridge for intercultural communication across the Asia-Pacific through geography, diplomacy, and education. It begins with the country’s regional role, then explores COIL as a model of digital collaboration, and finally introduces Immersive Open Pedagogies using VR, AR, and the Metaverse. Through these perspectives, students will develop intercultural competence and critical understanding of how technology can connect people and cultures in meaningful ways.Lecturer:Roberto B.Figueroa Jr.

  • This course reexamines international relations from the perspective of the Pacific Islands, focusing on the region’s historical background and agency that have not been sufficiently recognized. Through case studies such as colonization and decolonization, climate diplomacy, and U.S.–China rivalry, the course examines international relations in the Trans-Pacific region from multiple perspectives.Lecturer: Masaki Kataoka

  • This course rethinks common images and assumptions about Hawaiʻi, especially those shaped by tourism, and explores aspects of Hawaiian society that are not immediately visible. It examines how colonial structures continue to shape contemporary Hawaiʻ, even as multicultural social dynamics evolve. By using Hawaiʻi’s history as a lens, the course also considers broader global processes. As a place deeply shaped by colonialism, migration, militarization, and tourism, Hawaiʻi provides a valuable perspective for understanding the modern world. Lecturer: Keaki Matsudaira
