Title:
Modelling Pedestrian Dynamics
Abstract:
Pedestrian dynamics is a rich interdisciplinary field at the intersection of appliedmathematics, physics, and the social sciences, with applications ranging from urban planningto crowd safety. In this talk, I will give an overview of the main modelling approaches used todescribe pedestrian motion, from microscopic agent-based models to macroscopiccontinuum descriptions.
I will discuss the key challenges of the field: incorporating human decision-making, handlinghigh-density regimes with congestion, capturing non-local interactions, and validatingmodels against experimental data. Selected experimental results will be presented toillustrate typical collective phenomena such as lane formation, bottlenecks, and stop-and-gowaves.
The second part of the talk will focus on mathematical models for pedestrian flows, including continuity equations with non-local velocities, congestion effects, and game-theoretic or rational behaviour models. I will conclude by presenting some contributions tothe field, highlighting how analytical insights and structure-preserving numerical methodscan be used to better understand and simulate realistic pedestrian dynamics.
This lecture was conducted as part of the exchange program under the Inter-University Exchange Project "Program for Developing Human Resources to Lead Mathematical and Physical Sciences for the Advancement of Cutting-Edge Science in Japan and EU Countries".
