Multicultural and Multilingual Communication Training (MMCT)

【International Collaborative Online Learning with Students from Japan, the U.S., Taiwan, and Korea】 "SEKATEN-UX: Inter-University Exchange Project" is a collaborative initiative among universities in Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Taiwan. The project aims to cultivate individuals who, from a global perspective, can address social challenges beginning at the local level. Specifically, it seeks to develop students who can: understand diverse cultures and values, collaborate with people from different backgrounds who hold those diverse cultures and values, identify both global and local challenges, think critically about ways to address those challenges from a local context, and communicate their ideas effectively to a broader audience. This course is designed for students from participating universities to learn together and to develop and strengthen these five competencies through collaborative learning. Participating institutions are located in Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Taiwan. The course focuses primarily on case studies related to these four regions. All four are classified as advanced economies, and the participating universities are located outside major metropolitan areas. As a result, they share many similar regional challenges. At the same time, each region has rich, distinct cultural traditions that lead to different perspectives and approaches to problem-solving. Through this course, students will deepen their understanding of one another’s contexts and exchange ideas, thereby contributing meaningfully to the development of competencies that SEKATEN-UX seeks to promote. Course Structure is as follows: - In Sessions 1–6, faculty members from the participating universities will introduce “hot issues” in their respective regions. These sessions will enhance students’ understanding of the societies, cultures, current conditions, and challenges of Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Taiwan. - Sessions 7–11 focus on the relationships between the United States and East Asia (particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan), as well as international relations within East Asia. Although these four regions have distinct cultural traditions and histories—including periods of conflict—they have overcome their differences and continue to engage in political, economic, and cultural exchange based on shared values. By learning about mutual perceptions and differences among these regions, students will be encouraged to move beyond a purely national perspective and gain a broader understanding of their own country’s international relationships. The course also aims to provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their country’s and their own futures in an increasingly uncertain global environment. - Sessions 12 and beyond will explore the theme of “acting locally with a global perspective.” The classes will focus on environmental issues, including energy challenges. Environmental issues are global in scale, yet many solutions are being implemented at the local level. For example, diverse forms of renewable energy are being introduced in ways tailored to regional characteristics—a movement often referred to as Green Transformation (GX). By discussing environmental challenges as shared global issues, students will integrate both international and local perspectives. Throughout the course, substantial time will be devoted to student discussions. By engaging in dialogue and teaching one another about their cultures and languages, students will particularly strengthen their abilities in (1) intercultural understanding and (2) multicultural collaboration, while continuing to develop the full set of five core competencies outlined above. English is the primary language of communication, while we will provide automatic translation into Japanese, Chinese, and Korean to supplement your understanding. Graduate students can audit this course, although they cannot receive credit.
