Distinctive cultures have developed across South Asia, reflecting both regional diversity and shared characteristics. In this class, we will deal with specific examples related to clothing, food, housing, faith, medical care, well-being, craft, play and games in various parts of South Asia, and discuss their history, social background, and modern changes in a wide range. Through these lectures, students acquire a basic perspective for thinking about South Asian living culture and design, and deepen their understanding of its diversity and commonality. In addition, the class also deals with Japanese examples and acquires the ability to reconsider Japanese culture and design from comparisons with South Asia.

We will consider religious practice from daily offerings to festivals and pilgrimages, and deepen our understanding of the religious aspects of daily life and their transformation.
Consider traditional medicine and modern medicine, and deepen your understanding of the pluralistic medical situation in which they are mixed.
Consider how to work with others and your outlook on life, and deepen your understanding of the form of happiness and the current issues surrounding it.
Decipher play and games as ways of reconfiguring relationships between self and others, and deepen your understanding of their potential to transform society and of the mechanisms through which they do so.
Understand the diversity and commonality of design and culture in each region of South Asia.

・ Discussions on the Online Discussion Board (40%): Evaluate the degree of understanding of the lecture content through the discussion on the discussion board based on the content of the lecture of each session.
・ Final report (40%): Students will identify their own topic concerning contemporary South Asian culture and design based on the material covered in the course, and will be evaluated on their analysis of that topic.
・ Engagement with Learning (20%): Evaluate the subjective academic attitude based on the viewing status of lectures, initiatives on assignments, and records of academic status.
