This course takes a three-step approach: introductory lectures, questions & answers, and policy simulations.
Introductory lectures cover Japan's regional cooperation with Asian & European countries, European Union, NATO, as well as Japan-US alliance. Case studies on Taiwan and Ukraine crises will highlight the importance of US-led alliance in the Indo-Pacific region.
This on-line seminar introduces Q&A sessions in each 15-minute section, in order to prepare for the final step: policy simulations on crisis management.

Introduction to the Course
Japan’s evolving Indo-Pacific role focuses on security policies, global conflicts like Ukraine, and strategic simulations. It addresses the shift from economic interdependence to global norm promotion, emphasizing flexibility in response to crises like COVID-19 and Japan’s 2011 earthquake. Red Team Thinking enhances decision-making by challenging traditional assumptions. The lecture links lessons from the Korean War to current global security, examining emerging technologies’ impact on warfare. Japan strengthens alliances, including NATO and the US, to address regional instability, nuclear threats, and evolving geopolitical challenges.

Japan’s Security Challenges: North Korea, China, and Regional Stability
Japan’s security landscape is shaped by North Korea’s evolving military threats, including nuclear weapons and missile capabilities. Japan has deployed a layered missile defense system, including SM-3 and PAC-3 interceptors and warning systems such as J-Alert. The US-Japan alliance remains essential for deterrence. In addition, North Korea’s internal instability, influenced by South Korean culture, raises concerns about long-term regime fragility. This course will discuss why the world changed its strategic narrative from Asia-Pacific to Indo-Pacific by focusing on Japan’s regional cooperation, alliance/partnership, crisis management, and “policy simulations”.

This seminar extensively uses analytical tools, including DIME (Diplomatic / Informational / Military / Economic) options and SWOT (Strength / Weakness / Opportunity / Threat) analysis to obtain a broader perspective of the Indo-Pacific security.
