Changing Earth - Toward Coexistence with Nature -

【International Collaborative Online Learning with Students from Japan, the U.S., Taiwan, and Korea】 "SEKATEN-UX: Inter-University Exchange Project" is a collaborative initiative among universities in Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Taiwan. The project aims to cultivate individuals who, from a global perspective, can address social challenges beginning at the local level. Specifically, it seeks to develop students who can ① understand diverse cultures and values, ② collaborate with people from different backgrounds who hold those diverse cultures and values, ③ identify both global and local challenges, ④ think critically about ways to address those challenges from a local context, and ⑤ communicate their ideas effectively to a broader audience. This course is designed for students from participating universities to learn together and to develop and strengthen these five competencies through collaborative learning. Regarding climate change, understand the current challenges and background from a macro perspective based on planetary boundaries, and comprehend their impact on humanity through specific examples such as natural disasters, effects on food production, and health. Then, learn about short- and medium-term countermeasures to address current impacts from increasing natural disasters, food production, and social life, as well as long-term initiatives such as GX, CO2 reduction, absorption, and storage, that aim to curb climate change by promoting nature's recovery and achieving coexistence with nature.

Evaluation Method

Eligibility Criteria for grading
Must meet all of the following requirements
(1) Attendance Requirements: Must meet both ① and ② below
① Synchronous sessions (ZOOM): 50% or higher
② Synchronous (ZOOM) + asynchronous (OnDemand)*: 80% or higher
* Lecture videos viewed as make-up for missed sessions
(2) Assignments
Reflection sheets: Must have submitted 80% or more
Reports and projects: Must have submitted all

Evaluation Method
Evaluate assignments based on the following criteria.
(1) Problem-finding ability
Can understand specific issues related to climate change’s impact on the natural environment, food production, health, etc., from their own perspective.
(2) Cross-cultural understanding ability
Can understand climate change and environmental issues in different countries and regions while considering the background of those areas.
(3) Problem-solving ability
Can consider approaches to address climate change and environmental challenges.
(4) Cross-cultural cooperation ability
Can collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds to think about and work on solutions for global challenges like GX.
(5) Problem-posing ability
Can organize and convey their own thoughts on climate change, environmental issues, GX challenges, and their solutions.

Grading Criteria:
Grading will be evaluated comprehensively by the following three methods.
① Class participation attitude 20%
② Reflection sheets for each lecture 30%
③ Assignments 50%

Grades and Scores:
S: Excellent 90 points or higher
A: Good 80–89 points
B: Fair 70–79 points
C: Pass 60–69 points
D or F: Fail 60 or below

Credits
(1) Implementing Faculty, University of Miyazaki: Evaluate students according to the criteria.
(2) Grades will be sent from the University of Miyazaki to each university.
