この講義では、神道の神社の中でも最も有名な伊勢神宮を取り上げ、その創建の経緯、その祭祀の概要をまず説明する。次いで、伊勢神宮の祭祀の中でも最も特徴的な祭祀で、20年に一度おこなわれる式年遷宮の歴史と一連の儀礼を概説し、それがどのように持続可能性という概念と関係しているのかを考察する。
