寒い地域の夜空を彩るオーロラですが、どのようにして光っているのでしょうか。また、なぜ、寒い地域に出現するのでしょうか。 改めて考えてみると、オーロラには多くの疑問があると思います。 しかも、オーロラ現象は、地球だけではなく、木星や土星にも見られます。 オーロラが発生する条件とは一体何なのでしょうか。 近年のオーロラ研究は、地球と惑星のオーロラの原因が、太陽にあることを、明らかにしてきました。 本講義では、オーロラ発生の仕組みにとどまらず、オーロラのエネルギーの源となる、太陽表面の絶え間のない変動、特に黒点の変動と、その影響を強く受ける惑星環境について、最新の人工衛星と地上望遠鏡の観測成果を基に、解説したいと思います。
